Exterior Siding Options for Pacific Northwest Climate

Portland's wet climate is tough on exterior siding. Here's what works best and why.
Fiber Cement (James Hardie)
Fiber cement is the gold standard for Pacific Northwest homes. It's moisture-resistant, doesn't rot, resists insects, and holds paint for 15+ years. James Hardie products are engineered specifically for different climate zones, including the PNW's wet conditions. It costs more upfront but offers the best long-term value.
Cedar
Natural cedar has been a PNW staple for generations. It's naturally rot-resistant and beautiful, developing a silver-gray patina over time if left unstained. However, it requires more maintenance than fiber cement — staining or sealing every 3-5 years.
Vinyl
Modern vinyl siding has improved dramatically in appearance and durability. It's the most affordable option, never needs painting, and handles moisture well. However, it can crack in extreme cold and doesn't offer the same premium appearance as fiber cement or cedar.
LP SmartSide
Engineered wood siding treated with a zinc borate process to resist moisture, rot, and termites. It offers the look of real wood at a lower price point than cedar, with better durability.
Our Recommendation
For most Portland homes, we recommend James Hardie fiber cement siding. The combination of durability, moisture resistance, design options, and long-term value makes it the best choice for our climate. We're certified Hardie installers and stand behind every installation.
